Hi friends!
Today I’m sharing how we’ve decorated our home for Christmas this year. Hopefully it can give you some inspiration and ideas if you’re also living in a small space!
Our decorations aren’t particularly fancy, but I love how adding a few small touches and playing around with styling can really make your place feel so cozy and festive!
When it comes to decorating a small space it’s all about being a little creative, re-purposing what you already have and being intentional when adding new pieces to your home.
The “reading nook” as we call it has really come together this year after being empty for the past 3 years (aka the space to leave our indoor clothes line!) Decorating has been a slow process for us and that’s okay - we’ve been enjoying the process of gradually adding new pieces and bringing it all together bit by bit!
We added the two armchairs, the side table and a cute little lamp from West Elm that I’d had my eye on for ages. Then the gallery wall was the finishing touch (take a look at my Guide to Creating a Gallery Wall if you’re interested in putting together your own).
I love how the Christmas tree looks in this space… I kinda wish we could leave it up all year because it adds such a home-y, cozy feel to the room!
In a smaller space it’s nice to keep things simple and fairly minimal so we just have a couple of other pieces like these Tomte gnome’s. Aren’t they so sweet? My mum brought them back from Sweden a few years ago and they were a gift from the first Christmas in our apartment so they have a nice memory behind them too.
A new addition is the velvet cushion from West Elm. I have been so picky when it comes to finding cushions for our place as I’m trying to keep things minimal and also because the ones I like are always ridiculously pricey! I picked this one up during their Black Friday sale though and love how it’s a neutral colour but with a beautiful velvet texture for something more unique. It has a lovely shine too, so although I plan to use it all year round, it does feel a bit festive and fun!
When we bought our Christmas tree a few years ago, rather than also buying a whole bunch of baubles in one go we decided to add to our collection slowly over time. Every year we add just a few new trinkets and it’s such a nice tradition. This year we bought three of these lovely “cracked glass” ones from Adairs (for 50% off so I was rather happy with that bargain!) and they make such a beautiful addition to the tree. You need to remember that in an apartment, storing all these decorations can be a bit of a hassle so it’s nice to keep things minimal!
Gifts under the tree also become part of the decor, so being intentional with wrapping paper is a great way to add a little creative flair to your space. I have always loved the look of brown paper packages (tied up with string - any other Sound of Music fans out there?)
I think they look so beautiful under the tree and it’s always have fun adding extra little touches like ribbons or pretty gift tags. I always try to recycle the ribbons too (I don’t think I’ve actually bought any of the ribbons in the photo above… they were all recycled from previous gifts we received!)
This last tip might seem a little silly, but it makes me smile so I thought I’d share it anyway. I like to bring out my wedding shoes and leave them near the tree as Christmas decor, so that although they may not get worn a whole lot, I can still appreciate how pretty they are!
I love my sparkly rose gold keds and sky high Badgley Mischka heels and in my opinion, they’re beautiful enough to be treated and displayed like works of art ;)
On a side note that is totally unrelated to this post, but the service from The White Collection where I bought the heels was really excellent, if you feel like treating yourself to some beautiful shoes I’d definitely recommend them!
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed seeing these photos of our home and that it’s given you some decor inspiration! By being intentional and adding a few small, simple touches can really make a space feel special without too much fuss!
Let me know if you’re like me and love decorating for Christmas too :)
